Mayor's Column
Mayor Michael R. Mignogna
The recycling of glass, cans, paper and plastics saves Voorhees
Township valuable tax dollars while helping to preserve our
environment.
In 2007, our Public Works Department picked up 19,154 tons of
residential recyclables. Commercial recycling items in the amount of
30,610 tons were generated in Voorhees and taken to various recycling
facilities. Additionally, 9,991 tons of solid wastes (trash) were
disposed of at the Camden Incinerator and the Pennsauken Landfill.
Of all residential items collected in the Township last year, 65% were
recycled. By recycling, Voorhees avoided incinerator/landfill disposal
fees of $61 per ton and saved $1,168,373.
In addition to saving money, revenue was also generated through our
recycling program. The paper/cardboard and metal white goods collected
by our Public Works Department was worth $35 per ton. Revenue of
$72,472 was received through 2071 tons collected.
There is no question that recycling saves.
**For the first time in the Summer Twilight Series history, Voorhees
Township brings back-to-back concerts to Connolly Park starting on
Thursday, August 14, with a group of young talented musicians who will
provide a tribute to Dave Matthews. This cover bands recreates the
dynamic style of the artist. On Friday, August 15, Voorhees welcomes
back Big Shot, New York's world class tribute to
recording artist, Billy Joel. This show promises sights and sounds
strikingly similar to an actual Billy Joel performance. Both shows are
free and will start at 7 p.m.
