Youth Advisory Council

Introduction and Requirements

The Voorhees Township Committee has decided to form a Youth Advisory Council, which will consist of ten students who will participate with the Voorhees Township Committee or in an assigned subcommittee of Township Committee. For Township Committee or each of the four township subcommittees (Zoning, Planning, Economic Development, & Environmental Commission), two of the ten students will sit in on one meeting per month of these open sessions.

In addition to the monthly meeting of the subcommittee they attend, the students will attend a general meeting of the entire Youth Advisory Council, where they will report on the issues being discussed in each committee. They will also discuss what they would like to see the town do, in the form of recommendations.

The students will act as observers and functional participants of the meetings, and they will give brief recommendations to the members of each subcommittee. The Council will also serve two other functions. First, the Council will be able to plan and implement community service events. Second, the Council will provide a general forum for the students to discuss freely, important issues that affect the entire community.

The role of the Township Committee is to simply oversee these students, consider their recommendations, and generate interest in local government in the town of Voorhees. Most of the meetings will occur in the Voorhees Courtroom, as approved by the Voorhees Township Committee.

In order to apply for membership, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a regular student of Eastern Senior High School as a junior or senior
  • Reside in Voorhees Township
  • Maintain an unweighted GPA of 88.0
  • Attend all scheduled meetings
  • Have a genuine interest in local government, as evidenced in the essays

Students selected to participate in the program must be prepared to read, generate formal recommendations and proposals, and actively participate in the program. There will be two meetings per month (one with their committee and one with the Council), and selected students must attend both meetings.

Good luck with your application!
